Appropriate title me thinks :)
About 8 years ago I used to do my travelling in the bus and going through Fort area where my bus used to park itself I would have to walk a few hundred meters to get to it. At that point in time the general attire of most girls who would get into a bus was something along the lines of a long ankle length black skirt and a light coloured blouse of some sort. A walk through and fort I would see plenty of them. I would have to say this was the way most girls dressed 8 years ago.
Come 2008 trends have gone from that to most girls wearing knee length skirts not afraid to show a bit of leg and even some wearing stuff that is just above the knee. I know this sounds pervy but gimme a break I'm an observer of the ant like society at large. The bra straps show more often now and multi coloured bikini bras are the "IN" thing even in busy towns these days. I do recall there is used to be so much stigma over showing a bit of leg.
In my opinion one reason for this drastic change would be due to TV channel's like Sirasa TV, I think they captured a fusion of Indian-western-attitude and gave Sri Lankan's a dose of it. The promotions they run to boost their ratings can almost always be equated to that. Now you get the low necks the V necks the Bear Backs the Bikini bras and off the shoulder and the sleeveless and Spaghetti Straps that are the norm (There must be plenty more that I don't knwo the names to). All due to, I suppose a desensitizing of people's attitudes. Mothers are no longer shocked to see a girl showing skin and I believe most folk watch the various entertainment with great pleasure. One thing leads to another and thus more girls are conscious about what they're wearing but I think they are less cautious of what they are wearing.
I personally have no problem if people walked around in the Nude even. However this has been a fascinating project for me. I've been noticing how the skirts get shorter. Girls are bolder and I'm hoping guys are a little less frustrated because they must be getting more now. At least more eye candy.
This maybe not in the correct order but I also remember the general hypocrisy with guys where they don't mind looking at a chick in a Mini Skirt but the minute their chick wears one... well you know how it goes. (This part is for a friend of mine, I hope you read it) :) I have no idea as to why that is.. I mean I have been accused of being possessive and protective and all that but a chicks dress sense is her personal space me thinks and so is mine by the way...
Anyway given that more guys do see short skirts and more leg now.. seeing a chick in short skirt wont be a reason to stare anymore. I'm all for looking but admiration and desperation are too different perspectives altogether.
Most times unfortunately Sri Lankan society which is influenced by religion and its generally hypocritical values has led to the condemning of many things without reason for the sake of religion. A woman dress sense has been one of those things discussed by all faiths I guess. Still change has taken place and this is what has happened in 8 years, who knows what we will see in the next 5 years or less. I'm guessing the average length of a girls skirt will drastically reduce, more skin will show, public displays of affection will not be a thing of the past.. who knows really.. lets wait and see...
Or.. maybe I'll be writing about cleavage next time. Have a nice day.. its too early in the morning for me to be up anyway..

ah well times change... and you never really know what happens..
In terms of discipline and a well brought up society - it would be less skin and more clothes alright..:)
but then again, people will follow the trends they want and do what they believe in and want to do ne...
we just need to know our limits..:)
crash is my fav song! :D
and on ur post - I agree I agree I agree! i really dispise the desperados and the hypocrits here, so i always maintain a demure dress when in the bus. :) even my guy is quite possesive and tugs at my mini skirts if we're out. hehe. He said he'd let me go in bikinis IF we were in brazil. I agree with him, if the culture is more accepting, what u wear doesnt matter.
I think its a gradual process - after all, England was Victorian once. I'm looking forward to the day I can walk along the road in shorts and a t shirt and not get stared at!!! Grrrrr.... pisses me off.
Also, the anti-PDA stigma - in a country of bombs exploding where you actually don't know if you'll meet the person again, why is it so taboo to hold hands, cuddle up? Seriously, its ridiculous.
Yep its sad to see Sri Lankan's scorn at people holding their girlfriend's/boyfriend's hand. Pink Mist your absolutely correct with all the bombs going off, you never know if you are going to see that person again.
The bit of the girls showing more skin is true. Also happened to travel by bus and do notice that women now are less afraid and more confident in their attire. I guess with trends and the eventual progression of society it would happen.
Actually, even saw this girl in fort going to work wearing a mini skirt (sort of office suite type), and caused a lot of head turning :)!!
hello ppl,
Late reply due to a very busy week. Yeah times are changing many things and i believe this is good. Besides girls look more colourful these days. :)
Pink, true about the fact that you never know what time you might get blown up.
DC, I kinda like most of Dave Mathews. Crash is quite the perverted song though don't u think?? :)
LD, I think people should be free to wear what they want to wear and should not be treated differently because they wear something. I suppose this is especially directed at women and skin issue.
JD, ah you see what i see then :)
hehehe.. first of all, may i point out that you have a surprisingly wide knowledge of womens clothes and bras?
now.. i noticed the change too!!!
when i first left SL, I didnt come back on vacation for a whole year. and i couldn't believe how much the place had changed , when i DID come back!most girls/young women i saw were dressed up! and accessorised like nobodys business! :)
anyway... i'm glad things are moving along to the extent that women can finally dress to suit their individual taste; but it's a double edged sword, i think - cos i hope that we don't totally lose what it is like to be sri lankan...
i also have to apologise for not keeping in touch! let me know when you're online! we have catching up to do! :)
